Choose Sustainable palm oil as #EveryPalmMatters

Many of us have heard of palm oil. But, do we know that it’s an ingredient in over 50% of the products on supermarket shelves? This does not limit to your favorite ice-cream, chocolate, lipstick, makeup, toothpaste, cleaning products, biscuits, pizza, instant noodle and bread.

Unfortunately, the production of this popular ingredient can have a devastating impact on the environment and destroy the native habitat of animals like the orangutan and Sumatran tiger.

Up to 300 football fields of forest are cleared every hour for palm oil.

I was so shocked to uncover the impact that my weekly shop can have on the rainforest that I decided to support the latest campaign from the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil).

Choosing to buy products made with sustainable palm oil is an important change that we can all make to protect our rainforests and the creatures that depend on them. Sustainable palm oil is produced according to the strictest environmental standards and is an important source of income for 6 million people around the world.

However, only 20% of palm oil is currently produced in this way so we need to raise awareness of the products and companies who are doing the right thing and sourcing sustainable palm oil.

Here are some Facts on Palm Oil:
  • Palm oil is one of the most widely consumed products on the planet and it is almost impossible for most consumers to go a day without using or eating something that contains palm oil, one of the world’s most controversial ingredients.

  • The trouble with unsustainable palm oil is that it contributes to deforestation, habitat degradation, climate change, animal cruelty and indigenous rights abuses.
  • Malaysia is the 5th largest importer of palm oil, using 5% of the world’s supply.
  • Approximately 50 million tons of palm oil is produced annually, and according to the World Wildlife Fund, an area equivalent to the size of 300 football fields of rainforest is cleared each hour to make room for palm oil production.
  • In Malaysia, the expansion of oil palm plantations has led to virgin rainforests being cut down. This means wildlife habitats have been destroyed and carbon released into the atmosphere which is contributing to global warming and haze.
  • Malaysia produces around a third of the world’s 60 million tonnes of palm oil and palm kernel each year.
Every Palm Matters

The #EveryPalmMatters campaign's goal is to raise awareness of sustainable palm oil and empower people to make better choices for the future.

While our love to our children and next generation lies beneath our palm, what we use could link to saving our mother earth too.

By taking part in the campaign, you’re playing an important role in protecting our rainforests by raising awareness of the issue and helping to spread the word and inspire others to take action.

For a start, these are some brands that are RSPO members and use certified sustainable palm oil:

Here are my top 3 reasons supporting the drive of why #EveryPalmMatters:

    1.    I want a safer, more sustainable future. By the simple act of choosing sustainable palm oil products when I shop, I am helping to protect rainforests and the habitats of endangered species.
    2.    The RSPO is working in partnership with organisations like the WWF and Orangutan Land Trust to find a sustainable way for wildlife, habitat and palm oil production to coexist.
    3.    Palm oil supports 4.5 farmers in Indonesia and Malaysia and is an important route out of poverty.

Each of us can play our part and here is What you can do:

    1.   Get involved in the campaign by sharing your own palm photo and telling people why you care about choosing sustainable palm oil with #EveryPalmMatters on Instagram or Facebook.
    2.   Choose products that use sustainable palm oil..
    3.   Put pressure on brands to take action and switch to sustainably produced palm oil in their supply chain.

Choose wisely, as your palm may determine the world that you want for yourself, your family and your children. Spread the word!

    Love,
    Jessie
